RAYMOND — Hinds Community College made its first victory of the season a doozy.

Jabari Watson threw two touchdown passes to Tyrell Pollard, including the go-ahead score late in the third quarter, as Hinds upset No. 12 Jones College 17-16 on Thursday.

Hinds (1-5, 1-2 MACCC South) had only scored 30 points total in its first five games.

Watson’s 15-yard TD pass to Pollard with 4:36 left in the third quarter put the Eagles ahead 17-13. Jones’ Christian Baglione kicked a 31-yard field goal — his third of the game — with 10:47 left in the fourth, but the Bobcats’ last two possessions ended on downs inside Hinds territory.

Watson finished 7-of-14 passing for 98 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. He also ran for 78 yards. Defensive back Kearris Gilliam, a former Vicksburg High star, had two solo tackles and an interception to lead an outstanding defensive effort for Hinds.

Blake Murphy was 18-of-34 passing for 202 yards and one touchdown for Jones (3-3, 1-2).

East Central 24, Mississippi Gulf Coast 20
East Central Community College (4-2, 2-1 MACCC South) intercepted three passes, and got three field goals from Cade Mangum to stun No. 3 Mississippi Gulf Coast (5-1, 3-1) on Thursday.

Gulf Coast outgained East Central 386 yards to 333, but the Warriors had the ball for nearly 10 more minutes. Gulf Coast also missed a field goal and committed 11 penalties, including one that wiped out a touchdown on a kickoff return.

Gulf Coast had won seven straight and 20 of the last 21 meetings with East Central, dating back to 2003.

Gulf Coast can still claim its sixth consecutive MACCC South Division title by winning its last three games. It’s tied with Copiah-Lincoln at 3-1 in the division, and those teams will play on Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m. in Wesson. That game will be televised on ESPN+.

Northwest Mississippi 23 Southwest Mississippi 20
Zach Wilcke threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to M.J. Johnson with 38 seconds remaining, and No. 7 Northwest Mississippi (5-1) escaped a huge upset bid by winless Southwest Mississippi (0-6).

Northwest’s defense registered 10 sacks and held Southwest to minus-25 rushing yards on 25 attempts. Southwest used a blocked punt and an interception to set up two short scoring drives, and an 80-yard touchdown pass from Quez Goss to Marcellus Jackson to take a 20-16 lead with 1:38 to go.

Two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on Southwest’s touchdown celebration forced it to kick off from deep in its own territory. A 13-yard return by Johnson put Northwest at the Bears’ 37, and five plays later Wilcke and Johnson hooked up for the game-winning touchdown.

Holmes 52, Mississippi Delta 21
Chase Richardson completed 17 of 27 passes for 349 yards and three touchdowns, and added a 25-yard rushing TD as Holmes Community College (7-0, 4-0 MACCC North) stayed unbeaten with a lopsided win over Mississippi Delta (1-6, 0-4).

Malcolm Boykin caught three passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns for Holmes. His two TDs covered 51 and 36 yards, and both came in the first quarter as the Bulldogs jumped to a 28-7 lead at halftime.

Copiah-Lincoln 24, Pearl River 17
Deantre Jackson scored on a 4-yard run with 6:34 left in the game to put Copiah-Lincoln (4-2, 3-1 MACCC South) ahead, and it held on to beat Pearl River (3-3, 2-2).

Pearl River put together a 14-play drive after Jackson’s touchdown and advanced to the 13-yard line before unraveling. It had a go-ahead touchdown pass negated by a penalty with 33 seconds left, then took a sack and threw an interception to end the threat.

Jackson finished with 98 total yards — 53 rushing and 45 receiving — and two touchdowns.

Pearl River quarterback Ian Gonzalez was only 8-of-17 passing for 67 yards and one touchdown in his first college start, but rushed for 238 yards and a TD on 32 carries.

East Mississippi 49, Northeast Mississippi 21
Ty Keyes passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead East Mississippi (3-3, 2-2 MACCC North) to a rout of Northeast Mississippi (2-4, 1-3).

Keyes was 17-of-24 passing for 263 yards. He got the Lions rolling with an 11-yard touchdown run on their opening drive, and threw touchdown passes of 17 yards to Brendan Brown and 18 yards to Raymon Blackmon in the second quarter. East Mississippi led 42-7 at halftime.

Gavin Griffin rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns for East Mississippi. Jaylon York led the receivers with five catches for 81 yards.

Linebacker Ny’Jadus Roberts-Holloway had a team-high seven tackles and one interception.

Itawamba 37, Coahoma 14
Ty Davis threw two touchdown passes for Itawamba Community College (5-1, 3-0 MACCC North), and the Indians also scored two defensive touchdowns to beat Coahoma Community College (0-6, 0-4).

Davis was 11-of-15 passing for 178 yards and two touchdowns.
