Porter’s Chapel Academy’s football team went on the road Friday and did something it had never done before.
Jase Jung carried the ball 39 times for 276 yards and six touchdowns, including the game-winning 10-yard score in overtime, as the Eagles beat Wilkinson County Christian Academy 42-36.
It was PCA’s first-ever win in Woodville. It had lost six consecutive games there in a series that began in 1978.
“We beat a really, really good football team tonight,” PCA coach Blake Purvis said. “Those guys are district champs in their district, they’re going to get a first-round bye in the playoffs and probably make some noise down in 1A. A really, really good football team on the road. I don’t know if we have ever won down here.”
Porter’s Chapel (6-4) led 36-20 in the fourth quarter, but Wilkinson Christian (6-3) rallied to tie it and send the game to overtime.
The Rams got the ball first in the extra period and went nowhere. A run was stuffed on first down, and two incomplete passes followed before Conley Johnston ended the possession with a sack.
Johnston led PCA’s defense with eight tackles, three tackles for loss, and three sacks.
PCA then got the ball and put it in the hands of Jung. The senior was stopped for no gain on first down, then scored from the 10-yard line to end the game and send the Eagles flying back north on Highway 61 happy.
“It was awesome. They battled, they fought, they overcame adversity. They picked each other up all night long,” Purvis said. “These guys laid it on the line. They responded to a challenge this week. We challenged them last Friday night in the huddle, we challenged them Monday at practice about this week and they’ve responded all week long.”
In addition to Jung’s big night, the Eagles got offensive and defensive contributions across the board.
Henry Slayton had nine tackles, two tackles for loss and two sacks on defense. Schaeffer Bell forced a fumble that was recovered by Morris Bailey.
On offense, Auston Moore rushed for 50 yards on six carries. Purvis said his total included several big conversions, including one on third-and-long that kept a scoring drive alive.
“Those six carries could have been the biggest six of the game,” Purvis said. “It wasn’t many, but they were crucial in crucial times. A huge, huge six carries by that guy. He had some big conversion runs.”
PCA will finish its regular season next Friday at home against Prairie View Academy (9-1). The winner will claim the MAIS District 3-2A championship and a first-round bye in the Class 2A playoffs.
