The Vicksburg Fire Department found itself fighting more than just fire Friday night at a home at 506 Speed Street.

Vicksburg Fire Chief Derrick Stamps said, while firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, a dog bit two people in the nearby crowd.

“As the crews diligently coiled the hoses and secured them back onto the truck, a sudden commotion broke out when a dog, seeming startled, lunged at the crowd and bit two unsuspecting bystanders,” Stamps said, adding both people were treated on scene in an ambulance and did not need to be transported for further medical care.

As for the fire itself, Stamps said crews brought the blaze under control in a short amount of time.

“At around 5:37 p.m., the Vicksburg Fire Department received a call about a structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters were greeted by a thick plume of smoke billowing from every corner of the house, casting an ominous shadow over the scene,” Stamps said. “Determined to combat the blaze, the crews quickly launched an interior attack, navigating through the haze to locate the fire’s origin. As they moved deeper into the home, they discovered the back floor had been severely compromised, burning through in placing and creating a perilous hazard. With relentless effort, the firefighters battled  the flames, their determination evident as they fought to bring the situation under control.”

Despite the quick response, Stamps said the damage was extensive and not relegated to just the home of origin.

“Despite their best efforts, damage extended to the neighboring structure,” he said. “But luckily, no injuries were reported for either property. The teamwork and dedication of the fire crews were instrumental in preventing even more significant damage and safeguarding the community.”

Stamps said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
