Jeffery Morrison pleaded guilty on Tuesday to two felonies in Judge Toni Terrett’s courtroom. He faced charges for attempted escape from jail and attempted aggravated assault on a police officer.

Morrison was represented by attorney Yemi Kings. Branon Southerland represented the prosecution.

The incident, which occurred during Morrison’s incarceration, took place in September of 2022 and involved Morrison’s assault on a jailer who was attempting to refill his water bottle, Southerland said. At the time, Morrison was incarcerated for an aggravated assault charge.

Morrison allegedly began a physical altercation with the officer, in which he bit the officer, tearing his clothes and breaking the skin. Southerland reported the officer has a permanent scar from the incident.

Although a jury had been chosen and seated, Morrison stated Tuesday morning that he wished to change his plea to guilty.

Morrison also faces another, unrelated charge for assault on a police officer. Those charges are pending.

Terrett accepted Morrison’s plea and set a sentencing date for Nov. 15.  Morrison faces up to 35 years for the charges.
