Flashes upset Winston Academy in five-overtime playoff thriller

On the first night of the MAIS football playoffs, St. Aloysius pulled off the upset of the year — maybe even the decade.
Sadler Lambiotte scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 1-yard run, and Dru Gleese broke up a pass on the final play of Winston Academy’s next possession as the Flashes won 33-27 in five overtimes Friday in the first round of the MAIS Class 4A playoffs.
All of the game’s points were scored in overtime.
“Toward the end of the game I said let’s just get to overtime and roll, and that’s just what we did,” St. Al coach Walker Mosby said. “I felt confident with my guys when the ball’s on the 10 and we’ve got to get 10 yards to score. That’s just what they did. I’m proud of all of them stepping up and competing and fighting all the way through the game.”
St. Al (3-8) lost 27-12 to Winston (6-5) in the regular-season finale last week, but came back to beat one of last year’s MAIS Class 4A semifinalists. It is St. Al’s first playoff win since 2015.
The Flashes advanced to play District 3-4A champion Bowling Green (6-4) on the road in Franklinton, Louisiana, next Friday.
“It’s huge for the program and what we’re trying to do. Making the playoffs is the standard now. We’re just going to try and up the bar on it,” Mosby said.
The game was a scoreless tie through four quarters, and then the teams traded touchdowns through four more periods of alternating possessions starting at the opponent’s 10-yard line.
Lambiotte scored three rushing touchdowns, including on a quarterback sneak for St. Al’s go-ahead score in the fifth overtime, and Thompson Fortenberry had two including a 10-yard run in the fourth overtime. Winston quarterback Holder Tidwell had two rushing touchdowns and threw a TD pass.
Both teams missed PAT attempts in the third overtime — Winston’s would have won it — and finally a defensive stand by St. Al brought the game to an end.
After Lambiotte’s sneak put the Flashes ahead 33-27, the defense pushed Winston to fourth-and-goal from the 10 on its possession. Tidwell’s pass was broken up by Gleese to give them the win.
“Our defense played lights out all night. Coach (Bumper Brogdon), Coach (Buddy) Wooten and Coach (Jared) Bell all did a heckuva job defensively this week preparing for what Winston had,” Mosby said. “It’s always hard to play somebody twice. We watched the film, we made the adjustments. But the biggest thing is us digging down and fighting. That’s what it really boils down to.”
