A record-setting performance propelled Decorey Knight Jr. to another Vicksburg Post Athlete of the Week award.
The Vicksburg High football player received 1,445 of the 2,502 votes cast in an online poll of The Post’s readers to earn the honor for the second time this season.
St. Aloysius cross country runner Samantha Edwards finished second, with 690 votes. Warren Central cross country runner Cora Lindsay was third, with 270 votes, and Porter’s Chapel Academy football player Jase Jung was third with 118.
Knight, a senior running back, rushed for 154 yards and one touchdown, and caught five passes for 109 yards and a touchdown in a 41-27 loss to Columbus on Nov. 1.
With his performance, Knight set the VHS school record for career rushing yards. Knight now has 2,960 yards and 28 rushing touchdowns in three varsity seasons at Vicksburg. Sylvester Stamps, who went on to play six seasons in the NFL, held the record of 2,946 yards set between 1977 and 1979.
Including his freshman season, which he played at Warren Central before transferring to Vicksburg, Knight has 3,028 yards and 29 touchdowns in his high school career. His totals at Warren Central do not count toward the Vicksburg High record.
Knight previously won the Athlete of the Week award for the week of Sept. 8, and once during the 2022 season.
Congratulations to Decorey and the other nominees, and thank you to our readers for voting.
