There’s a lot coming up as Christmas approaches

Well. You get just one more column of me saying we’re approaching my first whatever-it-may-be in Vicksburg. But, this is a good one: the Christmas season.

December 18 will mark a full year for me here at The Vicksburg Post and one of the significant aspects of that is that I have now seen almost a full year’s worth of events in the River City. Having gone through everything one time – which includes planning for coverage of events and writing about them, as well as actually attending them – really does help a person feel like they know what’s coming and feel better prepared for it. And after 12 months of being pleasantly surprised by what Vicksburg brings to the table for special events and holidays, I’m certainly looking forward to the build-up for Christmas.

By the time I was officially on the job last year, several of what I understand to be the cornerstone Christmas events had already taken place, but I’m excited to see them this season. I missed last year’s Christmas parade and, at this point, I know how Vicksburg turns out when it’s time to march down Washington Street in celebration of a holiday or event.

I also missed out on last year’s O’ Christmas Tree tour of homes, something I’m particularly looking forward to this year. I feel sure I’ve mentioned before my fascination with some of the beautiful homes I pass when I’m driving down Vicksburg and the mental list I’ve put together of which ones I want to find an excuse to get inside of. So, look out, because yours might be on my list. But, I’m really excited to check out the ones featured on this year’s tour, information we will be sharing with you all in the coming weeks.

And speaking of sharing things with you, the November/December edition of Vicksburg Living magazine has arrived and we’ll be getting it out to all its usual spots this week. This edition is full of fun holiday stories, tips and even a glance inside another of Vicksburg’s beautiful houses, so there’s plenty to check out as we count down to Christmas.

Now, I know some people get annoyed when we overlook holidays and, honestly, I’m one of them. So, as excited as I am to get to all of the upcoming Christmas events, I know we still have Thanksgiving to enjoy in a couple of weeks. I’m not forgetting about it. How could I? What’s not to love? Lots of food, plenty of football and a time to catch up with family and friends. And, hey! If you haven’t been paying attention, the Lions may even win the game this year.

So, let’s all take a deep breath as we enter the last six weeks of 2024. I know the holidays can be a stressful time, but they’re also a lot of fun, and I’m enjoying getting to say one more time that I can’t wait to experience what Vicksburg has to offer during my first…Christmas season, this time. It’s my last first here and I’m going to enjoy it!
