The Jackson State Tigers are once again the beasts of the East.

Jacobian Morgan threw two touchdown passes, and Jackson State grinded out a 16-10 victory over Alabama State on Saturday to earn its seventh consecutive victory and clinch the Southwestern Athletic Conference East Division championship.

Jackson State (9-2, 7-0) won its third division title in four years. It will face Southern University in the SWAC championship game on Dec. 7, with the site to be announced by the conference next week.

JSU will finish the regular season on Nov. 23 against archrival Alcorn State, at 2 p.m. in Lorman.

The Tigers had 194 total yards against Alabama State (5-5, 4-3), but their defense only allowed 188. Alabama State quarterback Kareem Keyes was just 3-for-9 passing for four yards, with one interception.

Morgan threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Jameel Gardner late in the second quarter and a 44-yarder to Ja’Naylon Dupree midway through the third to put JSU ahead 14-3.

Alabama State answered with Daquon Kincey’s 46-yard TD run to get it back to 14-10 with 6:04 left in the third, but Jackson State’s defense eventually closed out the victory.

Ashton Taylor sacked Keyes in the end zone with 2:02 left in the game for a safety and the final 16-10 margin.

Robert McDaniel led Jackson State’s defense with 14 tackles and one sack.

Quincey rushed for 144 yards and a touchdown for Alabama State. Hornets kicker Brandon Gilliam, a former Warren Central star, kicked a 32-yard field goal in the first quarter and made his only PAT attempt.

Texas State 58, Southern Miss 3
A dreadful season for Southern Miss (1-9, 0-6 Sun Belt Conference) hit a new low point with a blowout loss to Texas State (6-4, 4-2).

Texas State quarterback Jordan McCloud completed 23 of 28 passes for 335 yards and four touchdowns, and his backup Brad Jackson was 4-of-6 for 102 yards and another TD.

All four of McCloud’s touchdown passes came in the first half, as the Bobcats raced to a 34-3 lead at halftime.

Southern Miss only had 194 yards of total offense. Rodrigues Clark rushed for 66 yards on 15 carries. Connor Gibbs kicked a 39-yard field goal in the second quarter for the Golden Eagles’ only points.

Mississippi Valley State 24, Florida A&M 21
Ty’Jarian Williams completed 19 of 28 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns to lead Mississippi Valley State (1-10, 1-6 SWAC) to its first win of the season.

Nathan Rembert caught seven passes for 130 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown, as Valley snapped a 15-game losing streak.

Florida A&M cut it to 24-21 on a 39-yard TD pass from Daniel Richardson to Jamari Gassett with 8:53 left in the fourth quarter. Its next possession, however, ended with a fumble inside the red zone.

Valley got the ball back with 5:52 remaining and was able to run out the clock.

Alcorn State 26, Prairie View A&M 13
Alcorn State’s defense had six sacks and an interception to make up for a struggling offense as the Braves (6-5, 5-2 SWAC) beat Prairie View A&M (5-6, 3-4).

Alcorn was outgained by Prairie View, 318 yards to 248, but the defense and a fast start kept it in front the whole game.

Jacorian Sewell broke off a 58-yard touchdown run on the game’s first series, and Alcorn got field goals of 50 and 38 yards from Noah Kiani the next two times it had the ball. One of the field goals followed an interception in Prairie View territory, and the other a 30-yard punt return by Stemarion Edwards.

A 16-yard touchdown pass from Tre Lawrence to Caleb Anderson put Alcorn ahead 19-7 with 8:38 left in the second quarter.

Tavarious Griffin finished Alcorn’s scoring and sealed the victory with a 22-yard TD run with 1:52 left in the game.

Malachi Bailey had seven total tackles, three tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks to lead Alcorn’s defense. Edwards finished with 11 tackles and one sack, in addition to his punt return that set up the early field goal.

Delta State 20, Mississippi College 14
Delta State’s defense had a big goal line stand in the fourth quarter that helped it beat Mississippi College (2-8, 1-6 Gulf South Conference) and keep the Heritage Bell trophy on Saturday.

Trailing 20-14, Mississippi College went on a 16-play, nine-minute drive that moved the ball from its own 31 to the Delta State 7. The Choctaws converted one third down and one fourth down along the way, but on fourth-and-3 from the 7-yard line Preston Godfrey was stopped short of the first down marker.

Delta State took over with 5:19 remaining and ran all but the last 37 seconds off the clock before punting. Mississippi College got to midfield on its last-ditch drive, but that was all.

Cole Kirk and Garrett Ames each threw a touchdown pass for Delta State (6-4, 3-3), and combined to complete 15 of 23 passes for 257 yards with no interceptions. Kirk also ran for 47 yards on 11 carries.

Curtis Rearden caught four passes for 126 yards and a TD for the Statesmen.

Marcus Williams rushed for 107 yards and one touchdown for Mississippi College. Williams, Godfrey and Eli Anderson combined to go 4-for-7 passing for 105 yards.

The Choctaws’ totals for completions, attempts and yards were more than they had in the previous four games combined. Their quarterbacks were 1-for-6 for 38 yards in that span, and did not even attempt a pass in last week’s 35-7 win over Northeastern State.

Belhaven 26, Methodist 3
Blake Kirby threw two touchdown passes, Devin Daniels rushed for 120 yards, and Belhaven (5-4, 5-3 USA South Conference) finished its 2024 football season with a blowout win against Methodist University (1-9, 1-7).

Wyatt Beck and Reece Benoit had two sacks apiece and Dee Gray had two interceptions for the Blazers’ defense, which held Methodist to 150 total yards. Beck had seven total tackles, including three for loss.

Belhaven won four of its last five games.

Trinity 38, Millsaps 24
Ryan Back passed for 308 yards and four touchdowns, two of them to Tyson Hancock, as Trinity University (8-2, 6-1 Southern Athletic Association) beat Millsaps College (5-5, 3-4) on Saturday.

Alejandro Tavarez caught seven passes for 161 yards and touchdown for Trinity.

Millsaps quarterback Cole Cantanella was 19-of-34 pssing for 170 yards and two touchdowns, with one interception. Connor Ladner caught five passes for 96 yards, and Kaiden Reese caught eight for 43 yards and a TD.

Millsaps finished its season on a three-game losing streak.
