100 YEARS AGO: 1924
Suggestions were requested for Vicksburg’s proposed centennial celebration.
90 YEARS AGO: 1934
R.M. Kelly addressed a Woodman of the World meeting at Drew. • Mrs. R.K. Sanders of Saltville, Virginia was in Vicksburg visiting her son, J.E. Sanders, and his family.
80 YEARS AGO: 1944
Two escaped German prisoners of war were captured at Rolling Fork. • Noted pianist Rudolph Ganz was presented in concert at Carr Central High School.
70 YEARS AGO: 1954
Douglas Leslie received the first service award, a 15-year pin, from the Vicksburg Westinghouse Corporation plant.
60 YEARS AGO: 1964
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Pettway announced the birth of a daughter, Pamela, born Nov. 18.
50 YEARS AGO: 1974
The Vicksburg Country Club held the grand opening of its new building. • The first towboat built by Vicksburg Shipbuilding Inc. was launched on a trial run.
40 YEARS AGO: 1984
The Vicksburg Gators, District 6, 4A champions, hosted West Jones in the first round of the state football playoffs.
30 YEARS AGO: 1994
Terri Tucker, a second-grade teacher at Halls Ferry Elementary, gave birth to triplet daughters at University Medical Center. Tucker was already the mother of four daughters, including twins.
20 YEARS AGO: 2004
A professional geologist helped Dana Road Elementary students collect seashells, many of which were thousands of years old, near the Mississippi River bluffs.
10 YEARS AGO: 2014
The City of Vicksburg was beginning the process of extending South Frontage Road. • Faulty wiring was determined to have been the cause of a fire at America’s Best Inn in Vicksburg.
