Vicksburg Chief of Police Penny Jones took to social media Tuesday to address a pair of unrelated incidents at Walmart.
Jones said Vicksburg Police Department (VPD) received reports of a male subject making unwanted advances toward both women and underaged females at the location on Iowa Boulevard.
“On Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the Vicksburg Police Department was notified of incidents involving a male who had approached women and young girls at Walmart, inquiring about dating,” Jones wrote in a post on the VPD’s Facebook page. “On multiple occasions, he was described as assertive in his advances, causing discomfort. Our officers swiftly identified the individual and contacted him. He voluntarily came to the Vicksburg Police Department for questioning. During this interview, he was advised that such behavior and unwanted advances are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
Jones also advised residents to continue to make VPD aware of any similar situations and to refrain from taking matters into their own hands.
“We encourage anyone with information about this matter, particularly if it constitutes grounds for formal charges, to contact the Vicksburg Police Department. Your cooperation is vital to ensuring the safety of our community,” she wrote. “We also want to stress the importance of handling this situation responsibly. Please refrain from making rants, threats, or any actions that could violate the law. Let us work together to address this matter within the boundaries of the law.”
Jones also addressed a second incident at the Walmart location, saying it was unrelated to the first and was medical in nature.
“Additionally, we are aware of questions about a separate incident involving a female arrested at Walmart for disruptive behavior in the restrooms. That situation was unrelated and involved an individual experiencing a mental health crisis due to being off her medication.”
Jones said, as the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays near, it is more important than ever for residents and visitors to the River City to maintain open lines of communication with law enforcement.
“As we approach the holiday season, please remain vigilant. When out in public, always be aware of your surroundings. If something feels off, trust your instincts and contact the police. Dialing 911 is always the best option in emergencies. Our officers are prepared to assist. If a victim wishes to press charges, we have the necessary information to proceed with an affidavit. Ensuring the safety and peace of our citizens is my top priority as your Police Chief. Thank you to our community for stepping forward with information. Together, we can create a safer environment for all. Remember, if you see something, say something, so we can do something!”
