LORMAN — Even without half a formation’s worth of suspended players in a meaningless game, Jackson State was too much for Alcorn State.
Jacobian Morgan threw two touchdown passes and ran for another, and Irv Mulligan rushed for 105 yards and two TDs as Jackson State hammered Alcorn State 48-10 Saturday in the annual Soul Bowl rivalry game.
Jackson State beat Alcorn for the third time in four years, with all of the wins coming on the road in Lorman.
Mulligan scored on runs of 5 and 7 yards as Jackson State (10-2, 8-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) scored on five of its seven first-half possessions to take a 27-7 lead at halftime. The Tigers added two more touchdowns in the third quarter to turn the game into a full-fledged blowout.
Morgan completed 12 of 20 passes for 211 yards, and ran for 60 yards as well. Joanes Fortilien caught four passes for 91 yards and a TD. As a team, Jackson State had 283 rushing yards.
Alcorn State’s Jacorian Sewell rushed for 119 yards, although most of those came on an 82-yard touchdown late in the first quarter.
Jackson State was without seven players who were suspended following a postgame brawl at the end of last week’s win over Alabama State.
It hardly affected the Tigers, who had already clinched the SWAC’s East Division championship and a spot in the conference championship game Dec. 7 against Southern University.
Alcorn State finished its season with a 6-6 record, 5-3 in the SWAC.
