Basketball Roundup: Vicksburg, St. Al head into holiday week with wins

The Vicksburg Gators turned back-to-back games into back-to-back wins.

Brycen Jones scored 12 points and Kris Washington added nine as the Gators beat Harrison Central 43-39 in a boys basketball game Saturday. That win came less than 24 hours after they routed Natchez 68-31 on Friday night.

Against Harrison Central, the Gators only scored two points in the first quarter before they got rolling. Jones had nine points in the second quarter to get Vicksburg back on its feet.

Washington carried the freight in the second half, with all of his points coming in the last two quarters.

The Gators (5-3) had a much easier time the night before against Natchez. Twelve players scored in the 37-point blowout, led by Mincer Minor with 14 points.

Ja’Quez Marshall and Jadarius Henderson finished with nine points apiece and Marlyn Foy scored eight.

Vicksburg has won four games in a row. It will go to Gulf Breeze, Florida, to play two more Monday and Tuesday in the Pensacola Hoops tournament. Vicksburg will face Oak Ridge (Tennessee) Monday at 9:30 a.m., and Gulf Breeze Tuesday at 8 p.m.

St. Aloysius 70, Silliman 51
Carson Gleese dropped in a game-high 26 points as St. Aloysius’ boys basketball team routed Silliman on Friday.

Anthony McCloud had his third double-double of the season, with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Carter Henderson added seven points and seven rebounds, while Carson Henderson grabbed eight rebounds.

St. Al’s junior high boys team also won, 42-36 over Silliman. Dru Gleese scored 24 points, John Hossley had seven, and Evan Mallard had six points and six rebounds.

Girls
Vicksburg 59, St. Aloysius 33
Cynia Johnson scored a game-high 18 points to lead Vicksburg High’s girls basketball team past Natchez on Friday.

Zion Harvey also scored 11 points for the Missy Gators (6-1), while Jordan Garace had nine, Ny’Keria Watson had eight, and Carjessa Albert seven.

The Missy Gators will play in the Pensacola Hoops tournament Monday and Tuesday in Gulf Breeze, Florida. They’ll play the event’s first game Monday at 8 a.m. against Oak Ridge (Tennessee), and then at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday vs. Gulf Breeze (Florida).

Silliman 58, St. Aloysius 40
Olivia Larsen and Annslee Averett scored 10 points each, but St. Aloysius’ girls basketball team lost to Silliman on Friday.

Megan Theriot and Taryn Lusby added eight points each for St. Al.
