Weekend events to commemorate 150th anniversary of Vicksburg Massacre

Published 10:36 pm Friday, December 6, 2024

Events this weekend will be held around the River City to honor the memory of the Vicksburg Massacre on this year’s 150th anniversary.

On Dec. 7, 1874, historians estimate a number ranging from 75 to 300 African Americans were killed when white attackers assaulted Black citizens who had organized to defend Peter Crosby. Formerly enslaved, and a veteran of the Union army, Crosby had been forced to resign from his elected role as sheriff, the first African American to be elected to the position in Warren County.

Saturday at 10 a.m., an Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony and Wreath Laying will be held at the Vicksburg National Military Park.
