Published 12:25 am Saturday, December 7, 2024

Warren Central kept making teams pay for their soccer sins.

Luke Bond scored on a penalty kick, and Eriam Diaz-Mejias and Jacob Porter scored more conventional goals as the Vikings went on the road Friday night and beat Columbus 3-1 in a boys soccer game.

The Vikings (10-1-1, 2-0 MHSAA Region 2-6A) have been awarded six penalty kicks in their first two region games. Bond’s goal, which came in the 65th minute, was the fourth that was successful. Another one earlier in the game was stopped by Columbus’ keeper.

Warren Central rallied after giving up an early goal to Columbus (2-5-2, 0-2). Porter scored in the 35th minute to tie it, and Diaz-Mejias got the go-ahead goal in the 52nd minute.

Duke Esparza and Daniel Wescott had assists for the Vikings, who took more than 20 shots but struggled to put them in the net.

Neshoba Central 3, Vicksburg 2
Neshoba Central (5-5-1, 1-0 MHSAA Region 2-6A) scored three goals in the second half to surge past Vicksburg High (0-8-1, 0-2) Friday at Memorial Stadium.

Gideon Thompson scored on a penalty kick to give Vicksburg a 1-0 lead at halftime. Abel Gonzalez had the Gators’ second goal on a backward header in the second half. Vicksburg keeper Arthur Davis made 12 saves.

Vicksburg will play two home games early next week, Monday vs. Riverside and Tuesday vs. Morton. The girls-boys doubleheaders begin at 5:30 p.m.

Manchester 10, Porter’s Chapel 0
Porter’s Chapel Academy played its first soccer game of the season, but couldn’t get much going in a loss to Manchester Academy.

Keeper Conley Johnston made 12 saves for PCA, and Colby Baker contributed some solid defense in the field. On offense, Auston Moore had two shots on goal and Ansley Conway and Audrey Carraway connected on several one-touch passes.

Other players, like Johnston and Hays, rotated through several positions.

PCA is a co-ed team, and Manchester is an all-boys team.

“For our team tonight wasn’t about the scoreboard, it was about playing together as a team for the first time and for many of our players for their first soccer game,” said Rebecca Sigh, who also had her first game as PCA’s coach. “We really want to focus on teaching those fundamentals and playing with purpose instead of just kicking the ball, and although tonight ended in a loss we showed great progress in that.”

PCA will play its next game Monday, Dec. 9, against St. Augustine. Kickoff is at 5:30 p.m. at Key City Park (formerly Sports Force Parks).
