Bring on the cold weather. It’s December, after all

Published 12:13 pm Sunday, December 8, 2024

This little arctic blast we experienced had some folks in a tizzy — but not me.

As I have stated in earlier columns, I like seasons, and it’s supposed to be cold in December.

I mean when else are we going to have the opportunity to wear sweaters, coats and fuzzy boots?

Last year, I made out like a bandit at our Dillard’s Clearance Center, my daughter-in-law’s favorite place to shop when she comes to visit, and found some Ugg boots in my size. I wore them a couple of times last season, but rest assured they will be on my feet this weekend.

I also have a couple of really nice coats that see very little wear, except on those few occasions when I get an invite to a Christmas party. Even when it’s not freezing outside, I still pull one on, just because it feels festive.

And then there is my collection of gloves and scarves. Gone are the good old days of ladies wearing gloves for all occasions; we only pull them on now when it’s frosty outside. As far as scarves go, I have noticed ladies of a certain age are wearing them year-round, but in the cooler months, I do tend to wear those made from a heavier fabric.

And just a little tip: Wearing a scarf around your neck does really help keep you warm. That goes for a knit hat too, but I only wear one if absolutely necessary. Maybe at the Christmas Parade of Lights, for instance, because once I pull it off, the static from the yarn does something crazy to the few baby-fine hairs on my head. It looks like I have been electrocuted.

Cold weather also calls for a cozy fire and a warm beverage. Last year, baby girl introduced me to Starbucks’ Peppermint Mocha Frappuccino with, of course, the whipped cream on top. All I’ll say is beware if you are a peppermint and chocolate lover. Those bad boys have 530 calories in the Venti — 24-ounce size. But who’s counting? And anyway, no one is going to notice a couple extra pounds if you are wearing a bulky sweater and heavy coat.

Snow can be a nice little added attraction with cold weather, but absolutely not freezing rain and sleet. That is where I draw the line. No one, and I mean no one – except for maybe the Abominable Snowman – likes it when the roads are too slick to travel on and power lines pop.

It is totally not cool when it’s cold both outside and inside your home. Pun intended.

For those of you who are like me and like a nip in the air during the winter months, I hope you are enjoying the temperature, because as we all know, the weather in Mississippi is fickle. One day you may be wrapped in fur and the next lounging in shorts.

So there is never a need to dither if you are hot-natured. In fact, next week’s weather predictions forecast temperatures in the 60s and 70s. Looks like we will have a little spring with our winter.
