Missy Gators clip Columbus for first region soccer win

In soccer, “all it takes is one” is a common message — and one the Vicksburg Missy Gators took to heart Friday night.

The Missy Gators had numerous shots and scoring chances, but their only goal came on a second-half penalty kick by Kennedy Mullins. It was enough to secure a 1-0 victory over Columbus at Memorial Stadium.

“We couldn’t find the back of the net tonight,” VHS coach Maurice Gilliam said.

Keeper Ava Pritchard had four saves, and Mullins scored a goal in her fifth consecutive game.

Vicksburg (9-4, 1-2 MHSAA Region 2-6A) won its third game in a row overall, and first in region play. It will host Warren Central Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., and then close out the 2024 portion of its schedule with a road trip to Neshoba Central on Dec. 20.

Columbus (3-6-2, 1-3 Region 2-6A) topped Vicksburg (1-9-3, 0-3) in a battle of boys soccer teams hunting their first region win Friday night.

Jarell Noye had Vicksburg’s only goal, and keeper Arthur Davis made eight saves.
