In the courtroom of Judge M. James Chaney on Tuesday, Carlos Harris pled guilty to being a felon in possession of a handgun. He was sentenced to 10 years, with three years suspended and seven to be served. Pending murder charges against Harris were dismissed due to lack of evidence.
Harris had originally been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jasmine Nicole Adams. On Aug. 22, 2018, police were called to her home on Lake Hill Drive around 1:45 a.m. regarding a possible home invasion. They found Adams lying by the back door in a room adjacent to the carport of the home with a single gunshot wound to the head.
Adams was later pronounced dead at Merit Health River Region.
The Cold Case Division of the Vicksburg Police Department worked on the investigation, culminating in the arrest of Harris in November 2019. At that time, he was also charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and two counts of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Another man, Kevin Phillips, was charged as an accessory after the fact in Adams’ death.
A grand jury indicted Harris during the August 2023 term.
