Southern Miss zips past ULM with big second half

HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss once again showed there’s nothing like being at home on a cold winter’s night.

Denijay Harris had a double-double with 19 points, 18 rebounds, four assists and three blocks as Southern Miss beat Louisiana-Monroe 84-67 in a men’s basketball game Thursday.

Southern Miss improved to 7-1 this season at Reed Green Coliseum, and 33-4 there over the last four seasons. It has not won away from its home arena this season.

The Golden Eagles (7-9, 2-2 Sun Belt Conference) trailed 40-39 at halftime Thursday, then stayed hot in the second half while Louisiana-Monroe (4-13, 0-4) cooled off.

Southern Miss went 19-for-33 (57.6 percent) from the field in the second half, after shooting 50 percent in the first. Louisiana-Monroe made eight 3-pointers in the first half, but was 2-for-13 in the second. The Warhawks shot 32.8 percent (22-for-67) overall in the game.

After trailing by as many as 10 points in the first half, Southern Miss opened the second with a 12-2 run. It took the lead in the first 30 seconds of the second half, on a pair of free throws by Harris, and never trailed again.

Jalen Bolden scored 17 points for Louisiana-Monroe, Coltie Young had 15, and Jacob Wilson finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Makai Willis also had nine points and 10 rebounds.

In addition to Harris’ big game, Alfred Worrell Jr. scored 16 points for Southern Miss and Neftali Alvarez had 14. Deantoni Gordon and Cobie Montgomery had eight points each.
