A fire that began in a parked vehicle also damaged a nearby building at a Vicksburg apartment complex Tuesday afternoon.

Fire Chief Derrick Stamps said the Vicksburg Fire Department responded to the scene at New Main Apartments on Alcorn Drive and quickly went to work controlling the flames, which had spread to the complex’s building 30 unit.

“At approximately 2:45 p.m., the Vicksburg Fire Department received a call about a truck fire at 2727 Alcorn Drive, which threatened a nearby structure,” Stamps said. “When the fire crews arrived, they found a pickup truck engulfed in flames, parked dangerously close to the building. As a result, the fire spread to the apartment building, causing damage to the structure. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames on the truck and the building, but one occupied apartment sustained damage.”

Residents of the complex said they believed the truck belonged to a maintenance worker who parked near the building while replacing a toilet in one of the units.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation, Stamps said.
