The Vicksburg Police Department (VPD) has taken two suspects into custody and is still actively searching for a third in connection to a shooting that took place on Interstate 20 near the Halls Ferry exit Tuesday afternoon.

Chief of Police Penny Jones said Keunte Bell and Altraveon White have both been charged with felonies in connection with the incident, which took place when White’s brother, 18-year-old Alvontae White, allegedly opened fire on a vehicle traveling behind theirs on I-20.

Jones said VPD believes an “ongoing dispute” led to Tuesday’s incident, which also led to one victim sustaining a gunshot wound to the arm.

Jones said Bell, 17, is being charged as an adult with armed robbery, two counts aggravated assault and drive-by shooting and is being held on a total bond of $750,000. At the time of the incident, Bell was out on bond and wearing an ankle monitor in connection with a previous aggravated assault charge in a separate shooting at the City Pavilion in June 2024, which also saw him charged as an adult.

Jones said it appeared Bell’s ankle monitor was not charged at the time of the incident Tuesday.

“I think, had they been able to keep up with (the monitor), he would not have been able to go to some of the places he has been going,” Jones said. “So, that’s a whirlwind that we are dealing with now.”

Jackson company Wrist Watch Monitoring LLC is responsible for maintaining the monitor, Jones said.

Altraveon White faces also faces two counts of aggravated assault in connection to Tuesday’s shooting, and is being held on a total bond of $400,000.

Jones said VPD iw currently working tips related to the whereabouts of Alvontae White, who is believed to have been the shooter in Tuesday’s incident. Jones said White used a “specially made” weapon in the shooting and will be charged with aggravated assault.

Two other suspects, an adult male and an adult female, who is the parent of one of the persons involved in Tuesday’s incident, were also taken into custody, but not charged, following the shooting.

Jones asked that anyone with any information related to White’s whereabouts call VPD Capt. Curtis Judge at 601-636-2511 or Crime Stoppers at 601-355-8477 (TIPS).
