A house fire Wednesday night on Hillcrest Street is under investigation after fire officials said suspicious materials suggesting possible arson were found on site.

“At approximately 8:08 p.m., the Vicksburg Fire Department responded to 901 Hillcrest Street for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, fire crews did not observe any smoke or flames; however, after speaking with neighbors, they conducted a further inspection of the area,” Vicksburg Fire Chief Derrick Stamps said. “They discovered a shattered window at the back of the vacant structure. Firefighters used a forcible entry technique to gain access to the structure, where they encountered a house filled with smoke and noticed a rolled-up shirt soaked in a flammable liquid. The fire crews ventilated the structure to clear out the smoke. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the incident is under investigation.”

This is a developing story. More information will be released as it is uncovered.
