STARKVILLE — Ole Miss made one miraculous shot in the final seconds Saturday against Mississippi State.
Only one.
Matthew Murrell hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 12 seconds left to force overtime, but Jaemyn Brakefield missed another as time expired in the extra period and No. 15 Mississippi State hung on to beat the 21st-ranked Rebels 84-81.
This was the first time in 271 meetings between the in-state rivals that both were ranked entering the game.
Riley Kugel made four 3-pointers and finished with 21 points for Mississippi State (15-3, 3-2 Southeastern Conference). Keshawn Murphy totaled 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Cameron Matthews also had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bulldogs bounced back following back-to-back losses to No. 6 Kentucky and No. 1 Auburn over the previous seven days. This was their third win this season against a ranked team.
Brakefield led Ole Miss with 20 points and seven rebounds, Sean Pedulla scored 18 points and Murrell had 15.
Ole Miss (15-3, 4-1) was coming off a massive road win against No. 4 Alabama, but was playing from behind all day.
The Rebels did not score in the first four minutes. Mississippi State started the game on an 11-0 run, led by as many as 14 points in the first half, and did not trail in regulation.
Ole Miss’ first lead came on a dunk by Brakefield that put the Rebels ahead 76-74 with 3:52 left in overtime.
Murrell’s 3-pointer capped the Rebels’ comeback from a seven-point deficit in the final seven minutes of regulation. Kugel had a long 3-pointer rim out at the buzzer, and the teams traded the lead in overtime until Mississippi State took control in the last two minutes.
Kugel’s 3-pointer put the Bulldogs ahead 79-77 with 1:35 left, RJ Melendez tipped in a miss a minute later, and the Bulldogs added three free throws to take what appeared to be a safe 84-79 lead.
Ole Miss, however, managed to get one final shot to force a second overtime thanks to an odd sequence.
Brakefield was fouled on a drive into the lane with four seconds to go. It was ruled a flagrant foul, which resulted in two free throws and possession back to Ole Miss.
Brakefield made both free throws, but his 3-pointer off the inbounds play was short and Melendez rebounded it for Mississippi State.
