Never a dull moment in River City

For those of you who watched “The Godfather” – specifically “The Godfather Part III” – surely you will recall one of Michael Corleone’s most famous quotes.

After he has tried to make the family’s business dealings legit, but later realizes circumstances may say otherwise, an angry and frustrated Corleone, who is played by Al Pacino, says, “Just when I quit, they pull me back in.”

How often I have felt the same way.

And it’s not that I’m doing something illegal and can’t escape the potential consequences that come with it.

I’m talking about the feeling of finishing up with one task or project, only to be assigned, enticed or sometimes dragged back into the next.

I think I am kind of feeling that today because for the past couple of weeks, I have been feverishly working to finish up the Jan./Feb. issue of the Vicksburg Living Magazine, which we have done. It’s at the printer and hopefully, any day now, I will be holding a copy in my hot little hand.

I also finally got all my Christmas decorations packed and put away, so with these two biggies out of my way, I surely thought I would have just a bit of air to do nothing. Well, not nothing, but that my activities would kind of slow down a bit. But that’s not going to happen.

We are already off and running with our next big project at The Vicksburg Post. Assignments for our annual Profile magazine have been given out and I am already connecting with sources.

That’s one thing I have had to get cracking on, and then there is an exciting weekend that is coming up at the end of the month.

I say exciting, but also busy, busy.

On Wednesday, Jan. 29, Vicksburg’s bicentennial events will kick off with a proclamation and dedication, followed by a parade. On Thursday, a bicentennial symposium will be offered, and the Vicksburg Beautiful Table Settings Bash will begin. On Friday, the Miss Mississippi and Miss Mississippi’s Teen contestants will be checking in for their orientation weekend, and a full day of Beautiful Table Setting events will continue. Early on Saturday, the 46th anniversary of the Run Thru History will get under way, the Beautiful Table Setting Bash events will continue, Michael Logue will be on hand at Lorelei Books with his book “Echoes from the Bluff: Vicksburg Bicentennial Edition” and the Miss and Teen orientations will continue. The Parkside Playhouse Theatre is also performing “Something Rotten” Friday through Sunday.

Fortunately, I won’t be covering all of these events, but certainly several.

So, just as I thought I would be enjoying a bit of down time, I have been pulled back into a whirlwind of undertakings.

But thankfully there are no machine guns involved — just tired feet and a pocket full of quotes needed for a story.

I have felt privileged to be part of a dedicated team at The Post throughout my tenure and hope that with theirs and with local support, I will be able to continue to grow and hone in on my skills as I help share the stories in Vicksburg. When asked what I like most about my job, my answer is always ‘the people.’
