The St. Aloysius Flashes are steaming toward the MAIS boys’ basketball playoffs, and Carson Gleese tore through the competition in this week’s Vicksburg Post Athlete of the Week contest like a runaway freight train.
Gleese received 6,151 of the 8,599 votes cast in an online poll of The Post’s readers to take the honor for the second time this season. He also won it for the week of Dec. 1.
Porter’s Chapel Academy basketball player Marley Bufkin received 1,585 votes to finish in second place. Vicksburg Swim Association swimmer Addison Billings was third, with 888 votes, and Vicksburg High basketball player Javeion Perkins was fourth with 274.
Gleese, a junior, led St. Al to two wins last week. He scored 18 points in a 56-43 victory over Cathedral on Jan. 23, and then had 30 points and seven rebounds in a 63-50 victory vs. ACCS on Jan. 24.
St. Al (13-9) is in second place in MAIS District 4-5A and will play in the Class 5A South State tournament next week at Parklane Academy.
Congratulations to Carson and the other nominees, and thank you to our readers for voting.
